Artist's Statement
Who can say when a photograph stops being a “snapshot” and becomes an
artistic expression?  When I create an image, I go beyond simple documentation.
I spend time gaining an understanding of the subject and its place in this world. I
work very hard to capture the inner “sense” of what I see and what I feel as I
stand in front of the subject to make the image.

  • How do I respond to it emotionally?
  • How does the subject fit within its environment?
  • What does the subject convey to me?

I strive to answer these questions when I make the final image.  The ultimate goal
for my images is to have the viewer experience what I experienced when I created
the image.

Technique
Images are created using Nikon cameras for 35mm color slide film and a Nikon
Digital Camera for direct digital capture.  The 35mm color slides are digitally
scanned using a Nikon Coolscan V film scanner.  As a rule, my images are only
modified to adjust color balance, brightness and contrast to reflect what I saw
the day I made the image.
